FAQs

Tallow balm is a natural moisturiser made from rendered beef fat (tallow), typically from grass-fed cattle. It’s been used for skincare for centuries because its fatty acid profile closely matches human skin oils, allowing it to absorb deeply and nourish effectively. Talova combines cosmetic-grade NZ grass-fed tallow with cocoa butter, jojoba oil, kawakawa, and carefully selected scents.

Cosmetic-grade tallow is a premium, pure form of beef tallow that’s been specifically made to meet skincare manufacturing standards. It’s significantly more refined than food-grade tallow, resulting in a pure, odourless product with superior texture and absorption. It costs more, but the difference in quality is substantial - and it’s why Talova has no beef smell whatsoever.

Many people with eczema find tallow balm deeply soothing. Because cosmetic-grade tallow is biocompatible with human skin and free from common irritants like parabens and petroleum, it can help repair the skin barrier and reduce dryness and inflammation. Our Lavender variant is particularly popular with eczema sufferers due to lavender’s calming properties. However, we always recommend patch-testing any new skincare product.

Yes. Tallow balm is non-comedogenic and suitable for facial use. Many of our customers use it as their daily face moisturiser. A small amount goes a long way - warm it between your fingertips and apply to clean, slightly damp skin. Jojoba oil in our formula helps balance oil production, making it suitable for most skin types.

Not at all. We use cosmetic-grade tallow, which is perfect for your skin and completely odourless. Unlike food-grade tallow (which can have a beefy scent), cosmetic-grade tallow has been refined specifically for skincare use. Each Talova variant has its own pleasant fragrance — Lavender, Coconut, or Ylang Ylang — and you won’t detect any animal scent.
